Create heroic moments of your own in Star Wars Battlefront

In May 1977 George Lucas introduced his space opera to moviegoers titled Star Wars: A New Hope. Today, the film is still viewed from storage media, digital download and streaming sources. As I have only reviewed The Division thus far, I have placed that game completely on hold. I still enjoy Star Wars: Battlefront since its release last year. Now console players with the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 can relive some of those moments with Star Wars Battlefront DLC Death Star. This is one game where any player can create heroic moments of your own in Star Wars Battlefront.

Early access is exclusive to season pass holders while other players will have to wait two more weeks. At a six gigabyte update, the latest expansion adds new hero Chewbacca and a new villain Bossk. A brand new mode just for the Death Star called Battle Station, with five new maps, two new weapons and two new vehicles. This third expansion is a little more real with exceptional detail dogfights between squadrons of X-Wings and TIE fighters.

The new game mode features three phases, each with a different goal to carry out. The first phase is a mainstream battle that depends on the ferocity of your fellow players. As the Rebellion is on the offensive,  with first volley of high energy blaster bolts striking against squadrons of Tie Fighters. The goal is to attack and destroy the stationary Imperial Star Destroyer. If dodging incoming enemy missiles isn’t enough, there is doing so while maneuvering through the debris field and asteroids avoiding the enemy ships. If the Rebels are successful the game proceeds to phase two.

The second phase features a ground battle inside the Death Star itself. After the transport docks in the hanger, the soldiers disembark as a part of an invading force to rescue R2-D2. Once inside the station, the goal is to retrieve the droid and move it to the extraction point inside the bay. And the third phase takes gamers back into space in a fight to destroy the Death Star. As a first person shooter speeding through the Death Star trenches is the realization of a dream.

The last mode of Battle Station “The Trench Run” while slightly different from the theatrical event in 1977 which counts down from ten minutes. In that time frame twelve X-Wing pilots of the Rebel Alliance and equal number of Imperial TIE Fighter star pilots engage each other until  the epic conclusion. Three X-Wing Rebel pilots are picked to travel to the first checkpoint and make the trench run while the rest of the Rebel pilots fly over the Death Star’s surface to run interference. The selected players maneuver through a series of checkpoints while Imperial players hunt them down.

There is no Han Solo piloting the Millennium Falcon in the trenches,  but if retrieving the Hero marker, players can also become the hero of the Rebellion, Luke Skywalker. With his designated Red-5 X-Wing the player begins an attack run on the Death Star’s thermal exhaust port. Once the undertaking to destroy the Empire’s greatest weapon is successful, the mission ends with the Death Star’s massive explosion.

However.  the game does not play out as epic, even on an UltraHD 4K SmartTV with Dolby Surround Sound. The XBox graphic representation of the Imperial Star Destroyer looks fabulous, but some would argue that there’s slightly more clarity to the PS4 version. The space battle with the Death Star is near to the theatrical version but it lacks the geometry with the shorter and narrow trenches. The Empire has all the advantage of defending the Star Destroyer, stopping the advancing Rebel soldiers in the base and intercepting the remaining Rebel forces in the trenches. Yet as a personal choice, it is absolutely fun to drive an X-Wing with the Rebellion in this conflict because everyone loves a hero.
