Free Video calling apps for any mobile device
With conference calls so real, even Dick Tracy would be proud (Did I hear someone say “Who’s Dick Tracy”). With so many free video apps competing for your business, its hard to know which ones are worth the time and effort. We can help with that. While each app is unique in its own way, saving money with international calls should grab your attention. Now that video watches are here, maybe flying cars are just around the corner. (Are you listening Mr. Musk?)
Viber
Viber, while in heavy competition with Skype back in 2010, now has over 200 million monthly users. The app integrates your contact list so there are no hassles, no invites to send with its easy to use interface. You can even make video conference calls (watch the video) while over the internet. Viber also offers free local, long distance and international calls free of cost. The free app includes text, image and video messaging across all platforms, with voice calling only on iOS. Viber also launched Viber Out, the best quality calls using your data plan or Wi-Fi starting at under two cents per minute. Viber to Viber calls are always free and users are able to communicate with end to end encryption.
MagicApp –
Another long time competitor is MagicJack, having sold over 10 million units since its launch. Having used Magic Jack for years personally, we can vouch for the fact that their quality of service has noticeably improved over the last few years. Using an existing internet connection, the Magic Jack device allows for local and long distance calls to the United States and Canada. Now life just got easier with MagicApp, users can download free with iOS. The companion MagicApp gives the user a domestic phone number for your mobile phone or tablet. Some of its features include making calls from your MagicJack number allowing for voice over Wi-Fi and Cellular. MagicApp services include unlimited calling to other MagicJack customers worldwide with caller ID, call forwarding, and voicemail.
Skype
As the prominently used VoIP app Skype hardly needs an introduction. For over a decade Skype is still free today, surpassing over 300 million users. Skype features instant messaging, local and long distance calling, video chat conferencing options and many other features. Skype uses a closed-source VoIP internet network proprietary protocol with excellent voice and video quality. Skype is still leading the market with over two billion talk minutes daily. Subscriptions start at $ 2.99 for unlimited United States domestic mobile and landline calls.
Facetime
Whats that? Why are we including Facetime? Even though Steve jobs introduced FaceTime at the Apple WorldWide Developers conference in 2010 along with the iPhone 4, its still one of the best and most widely used Video apps on the market.
Introduced as a video-telephony product from Apple, the video version of Facetime supports any iOS device with front facing camera. It also supports any Macintosh computer equipped with an iSight, now called FaceTime cameras. For all Apple users, free video conferencing calls was made available to all if the feature was enabled. The calls are also protected with end to end encryption, so only the sender and receiver can access it.
Three years later at the WWDC Apple announced a new audio only version of FaceTime equivalent to VoIP in iOS 7.This audio only version, using VoIP protocols, circumvents the cellular carrier’s services. The call quality is excellent with AAC-ELD codec for High Definition sound at low bit rates and low latency. To make a FaceTime call you need either a phone number or a registered email address. If you have either or both saved in your contact list, you can tap the video or audio icon and make the call. During a call you can switch between the audio and video, depending on the approval of your correspondent. With the free audio and video calls over cellular and Wi-Fi networks, FaceTime is the choice VoIP for any iPhone, iPad, iPod touch or Mac owner.
